On June 2, 1925, the New York Yankees were on a five-game losing streak … and their miserable record had them slotted in second-to-last place in the American League. Upon arriving at Yankee Stadium, one of their star players – Wally Pipp, was complaining about a headache … and asked the team trainer for 2 aspirins.

The team’s manager, Miller Huggins happened to overhear the discussion and said … “Wally, take the day off … we’ll try that kid Gehrig at first today … and get you back in there tomorrow.”

This would mark the first game of Lou Gehrig’s career … and he would go on to play an incredible 2,130 consecutive games … over the next 14 seasons!

SUMMARY:

Our client is a team of professional, entrepreneurial and goal-oriented individuals who help clients both develop and execute their marketing strategies.

Based in East Toronto and reporting to the Director of Sales … the successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of 6 to 8 Account Executives charged with developing new business, as well as retention of existing clientele.  The successful candidate will be responsible for all sales related functions within their region.

We’re looking for a true leader … someone who has experience in sales and/or peer leadership and is looking to take the leap into management, to guide and mentor a sales team of their own!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Mentor, coach and support sales team in selling skills and territory management
  • Accompany team members in field and client meetings to help develop their skills and close business
  • Motivate team via “daily huddle” call to share energy and enthusiasm for the day ahead
  • Analyze sales activity and determine immediate action plans to capitalize on opportunities, improve existing client relationships, recognize share of wallet opportunities to increase overall profitability
  • Establish goals for sales team based on company objectives and develop a strategy to achieve same
  • Prioritize daily, weekly and monthly objectives, including sales activity, to ensure effective execution
  • Develop & maintain positive & credible relationships with all levels, both internally & externally
  • Weekly 1:1’s with sales team, identifying areas for improvement, highlighting successful performance, etc.
  • Conduct team training sessions to share insights, roll out new programs, train on new offerings, etc.


REQUIREMENTS: 

  • MUST HAVE: 5+ years of sales experience in progressive roles
  • Experience working in a highly-transactional sales environment
  • A post-secondary degree
  • A demonstrated competitive spirit with proven sales track record
  • High energy and a desire to work in a results-oriented, customer-centric, fast-paced environment
  • Driven to exceed sales targets, strong prospecting, relationship building and closing skills
  • Understand business implications of decisions; demonstrates knowledge of market and competition
  • An understanding of sales forecasting and execution against targets

The eldest of 8 siblings … Joseph Henri Maurice Richard was born to a poor family during the Great Depression … on August 4, 1921 – in Montreal, Quebec.

One of the Montreal Canadiens most celebrated players … he was adored by teammates and fans alike! The Rocket (as he was affectionately nicknamed) was a goal scoring phenom … and over an 18-year career he celebrated many NHL ‘firsts’.

My client is looking for a ‘really smart’ (and fully bilingual) Sales Leader to join their organization.
Reporting to the VP, Sales … the Sales Manager will actively manage the performance of the sales team.
The team has functioned more as ‘order-takers’ than hunters … and the company wants to change that!
The Sales Manager will help the team achieve revenue quota while further penetrating their current client base.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with senior management to bring sophistication (performance management) to the sales team
  • Participate in preparation of annual sales budgets
  • Promote a consultative sales approach – driving value for the company and their clients
  • Mentor and coach the sales team on best practices

THE ‘HERB BROOKS’ ROLE ($160,000 – $170,000+)


Herb Brooks

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota … Herb Brooks enjoyed a relatively successful career as a hockey player.

However … his name would be etched into history once he hung up his skates and took a position behind the bench.

On February 22, 1980 … in Lake Placid, New York, the team Brooks had fashioned from a patchwork of US college and other amateur players took the ice in a semi-final game against an all-star line up from the USSR.

His group of underdogs pulled off one of the most memorable upsets in the annals of ice hockey history … by defeating the Soviets by a score of 4-3 … in what is referred to as “The Miracle on Ice”.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Director, Sales will assist in strategic planning and execution of sales and marketing initiatives to integrate sustainable growth within existing and emerging markets
  • Mentor, coach and develop the sales organization to perfect their selling skills and achieve targets
  • Set clear objectives … remove legitimate roadblocks … and lead the charge!
  • Analyze sales activity and determine action plans to capitalize on opportunities and increase profitability

Admittedly … not a term heard often these days.
That is … unless you hang around Match and Fable’s offices!

One of its meanings refers to something being ‘hot’ … as in, attractive or desirable.
For example, “Match and Fable is hotter than a 3-dollar pistol”!

Where did the term originate?
Well … back in the mid-1800’s … gun manufacturers like; Remington, Smith & Wesson and Winchester were selling a boat load of pistols.

As is often the case … counterfeiters recognized an opportunity to capitalize on the opportunity and make a quick buck.

To keep their pistol prices super low … their manufacturing processes and standards were naturally, extremely shoddy.  Mismatched parts resulted in misaligned chambers and barrels … causing a slew of problems when fired!

In fact, in some cases … these pistols would actually explode in the shooter’s hand!

Well … not much, really.
