FOOD FIGHT ($50,000 – $65,000)

In August 1945, a group of spectators gathered in Buñol, Spain (pop. 9,000) to enjoy the annual “Giants & Big-Heads Parade”, in the Town Square.

At some point, the spectators decided to join in on the parade.

Long story short, one of the ‘official’ participant’s Big-Head fell off, and he flew into a rage.
As there was a market stall of vegetables nearby, people started grabbing tomatoes and pelting each other with them, until local police stepped in.

The following year, several people took part in a pre-planned quarrel – bringing their own tomatoes from home. This marked the beginning to a yearly tradition that has grown to upwards of 40,000 participants!

‘La Tomatina’ has easily earned the distinction of the world’s largest food fight.
The ‘fight’ begins at 10:00am and lasts for one hour.
Approximately 150,000 tomatoes (88,000 pounds) are splattered.

PS: Surprisingly, the town of Buñol doesn’t even grow tomatoes!

TOLD YOU SO ($200,000 – $210,000)

On April 14, 1912, having just navigated its way through very dicey conditions, a ship named, the Mesaba broadcast the following warning to all ships in its vicinity.

“Heavy pack ice and [a] great number [of] large icebergs.”

A radio operator on one of those ships received the warning, but determined it wasn’t important enough to deliver the message to the captain.

You see, the ship’s radios had broken, and the operators were absolutely swamped, transcribing messages and hand-delivering them to the individual passengers.

Now, one would imagine a message warning about a high number of icebergs should have been a priority. To make matters worse, not only did he receive one message – he received a total of seven!

At 11:40pm on April 14, 1912, that ship (which you’ve likely guessed was named the Titanic), struck an iceberg.

We all know the rest of that story!

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s role?
Nothing, really!

That said, now that we have your attention, we’d love to tell you about Match and Fable’s latest role.

COLD SHOULDER ($94,000 – $106,000+)

Giving someone “the cold shoulder” is to be deliberately cruel or distant.
Ever wonder where the phrase originated?

Probably not.
But we’re gonna tell you anyhow.

During medieval times in England, it was a tradition to greet visitors with a warm meal.
That meal generally consisted of roasted meat.

However, if the host wasn’t fond of a particular visitor, they’d offer a less desirable and cold meal.

As rumor has it, unwelcome guests were served “a cold shoulder of mutton” in the hopes they would get the picture and leave! (PS: Mutton is the meat of an older sheep).

What does that have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Absolutely nothing!

That said, no need for the “cold shoulder” when it comes to Janna French’s new mandate.

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR ($94,000 – $106,000+)

“Close, but no cigar is a common saying signifying someone nearly achieved something – but ultimately failed, in the end.

Ever wonder where the saying originated?

Well, in the 1920’s, travelling carnivals made their way into towns and cities across North America. The games they offered were targeted towards adults and were well-known to be particularly hard to win – but people tried anyhow.

Those who managed to win did not receive stuffed animals.
Rather, cigars were handed out as prizes.

When a player failed to toss a ring over a bottle or a ball missed its target, the person running the game would say … “Close, but no cigar!”

What does that have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Absolutely nothing!

That said, while you’re here, we’d like to tell you about another role Janna French is working on. She is looking for an Account Executive in the Transportation industry in Calgary!

BITE THE BULLET ($48,000 – $52,000)

To “bite the bullet” means forcing oneself to face an unpleasant situation.
Ever wonder where the term originated?

Well, before anesthetics existed (or were commonly available), injured soldiers were often forced to endure extremely painful procedures.

In an effort to distract them from the pain, they were given a bullet to bite down on.

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Well, nothing really.

BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING ($55.00 – $60.00 / HOUR)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was released in 2002 and proved to be a colossal ‘sleeper’ hit!
$5,000,000.00 was spent to shoot the movie … and it raked in a whopping $357,000,000.00 at the Box Office!

In the movie, Toula Portokalos’ father Gus sang the praises of Windex as a cure-all and regularly referenced the Greek origin of virtually any word.

“Give me a word – any word, and I show you, how the root of that word is Greek”!
From arachnophobia to kimono, to the Miller surname – almost any word could be traced back to Greek.

In the spirit of Gus Portokalos, did you know the term ‘plastic surgery’ actually has nothing to do with plastic?

The word plastic comes from the Greek, ‘plasikos’ – which means ‘to mold or shape’.
Originally, specialists in these techniques focused on reconstructing damaged body parts rather than cosmetic augmentation.

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Not much really.

“Put that coffee down, coffee’s for closers”!

You won’t find too many salespeople who haven’t seen this infamous movie.

HOUDINI ($205,000 – $235,000+)

One of 7 children, Erik Weisz was born to a Jewish family on March 24, 1874, in Budapest.
Four years later, his family emigrated to the USA – settling in Wisconsin.

At the age of 9, he made his public debut as a trapeze artist.

At 17 years-old, he decided to become a professional magician and changed his name to Harry Houdini. He was considered a ‘competent’ … albeit, not particularly great magician.

That said, he became extremely proficient at escaping from handcuffs.
When Harry was 25, Martin Beck (who would become his manager) encouraged him to focus on escape acts. This decision would catapult him to international fame!

Over the next 20 years Houdini became one of the world’s highest paid entertainers … as he freed himself from jail cells, handcuffs, chains, ropes, and straitjackets!

From the humblest of beginnings, Houdini said the happiest day of his life was when he purchased a dress, originally said to have been made for Queen Victoria – and gave it to his mother!

HAND OF GOD ($130,000 – $160,000+)

On June 22, 1986, in Mexico City, with nearly 115,000 fans in attendance, Argentina and England squared off in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

At the 6-minute mark of the second-half, English midfielder Steve Hodge’s clearing attempt inadvertently sent the ball towards England’s goal where Argentinian superstar Diego Maradona was standing – alone inside the box!

As the ball dropped in, Maradona and England’s goalkeeper, Peter Shilton both jumped into the air.

Maradona’s hand, which was raised close to his head, managed to the touch the ball first and the ball skipped into England’s goal. The referees did not have a clear view of the infraction and despite England’s heated objections – the goal would stand.

The goal is considered one of the most famous, in all of soccer.

Following the game, when Maradona was asked whether it was scored legally, he replied, “a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God”.

Following the game, Maradona swapped shirts with Steve Hodge. On May 4, 2022, Hodge sold that shirt at auction for £7,100,000 – a world record for a piece of sports memorabilia!

MILKSHAKE ($87,500 – $93,750) + CAR

In the late 1800’s, a trendy, alcoholic drink was made with whiskey and eggs.
It was described as a “… sturdy, healthful eggnog type of drink, with eggs and whiskey … served as a tonic, as well as a treat”.

It was called – the ‘milkshake’.

By 1900, the term ‘milkshake’ referred to “wholesome drinks made with chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla syrups.”

100 years ago, in 1922, the milkshake as we know it, was born when a Walgreens employee in Chicago, named Ivar “Pop” Coulson, took an old-fashioned malted milk (milk, chocolate, & malt) and tossed in two scoops of ice cream.

In doing so, he created a drink which instantly became wildly popular across the USA – and around the world!
