PICKLE JAR (OTE: $77,500 – $85,000+)

As a kid, I remember my mother calling out to my father to come open a stubborn jar of pickles for her.

I would drop anything I was doing and scramble to the kitchen like a maniac, to “give it a go” before my father got there!

For me, opening that jar carried a badge of honour … just as failure in doing so, brought an abject sense of failure.

I’d try everything … from wet rags to running the bottle under water … to strategically tapping the lid with butter knives.

And, after I exhausted every method at my disposal … my father would waltz in to the room and … with his big, Croatian work hands – he’d pop the lid off without even a second thought!

Naturally … he’d turn to me and thank me for loosening it for him!
Deep down … I knew he didn’t really mean it … but it did help me save a little face!

NO QUIT ($45,000 – $50,000)

As we enter a new year … this story serves as inspiration for us all!

Adam Brown of Hot Springs, Arkansas was an A-student and star football player – with a bright future. That is, until he met a lady with a drug habit.
Adam had never dabbled in hard drugs … but after one hit of crack-cocaine – he was hooked.

His life spiraled quickly … and he began stealing to support his drug habit.
Shortly after that girlfriend left him, police found him in a crack house … laying in a pool of blood.

Facing 11 felony charges, he chose to enter a drug rehab to avoid jail time.
Adam eventually cleaned up his act and persuaded the Navy SEALs to give him a chance.

During a training accident, Adam lost his right eye … so he learned to shoot, using his left.

In Afghanistan, he suffered a freak accident resulting in his right hand being mangled – he learned to shoot with his left!

By age 33 … Adam suffered with arthritis, a bad back, a broken leg and surgery on both ankles – but he refused to quit.

In March 2010, while on special mission in Afghanistan – Adam was struck by enemy fire and died.

While his story ended tragically, Brown’s life is a testament to what can be accomplished by perseverance and hard work!

STICK ‘EM UP (OTE: $130,000 – $140,000+)

In 1986, Valerio Viccei fled Italy (he was wanted for 50 armed robberies) … and arrived in London, England.

The next year, he and his accomplice, Parvez Latif walked into the KSDC and asked to rent a safe deposit box.

Once inside the vault, the men brandished their pistols and overpowered the bank manager and his guards.

They hung a ‘closed’ sign on the front door, while ushering a few accomplices into the bank.

Ransacking the vault … the thieves fled with an estimated £60 million (nearly $200 million USD by today’s standards).  Viccei then hopped on a plane to South America – his riches in tow!

While in South America, Viccei began to yearn for the Ferrari Testarossa he had left behind in England. So … he made the decision to return to London and make arrangements to have his car shipped to his new home.

Needless to say – not the best idea he ever had.
Upon returning to the UK, he was identified, captured, arrested … and sentenced to 22 years in jail!

Long story short, he was deported to Italy in 1992 to serve out the rest of his sentence.
In April 2000, while on a day pass from prison … he was killed in a gunfight with police.

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?

Joe Pistone was born in 1939 in Erie, Pennsylvania but …. grew up in Paterson, New Jersey.
He joined the FBI in 1969 and since he knew how to drive an 18-wheeler … he was quickly assigned to the truck hijacking squad.

Joe’s ability to penetrate this crime ring led to the arrest of over 30 criminals.

More importantly … it demonstrated Joe’s budding usefulness for his next mission.

In September 1976, Pistone walked out the doors of his local FBI office and ‘vanished’ for the next six years!

Long story short, under the alias of Donnie Brasco … he infiltrated the New York Mafia’s Bonanno Family.

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role in Quebec?
Nothing, really.

PONY EXPRESS (OTE: $90,000 – $140,000 USD)

In the early 1800’s, there were two options for sending mail to California. The first option was via ship … (taking months at sea to be delivered).

The second option was considerably faster, only 25 days – via stagecoach!

In April 1860, three enterprising gentlemen recognized the need for a superior alternative.
They called it – The Pony Express.

They organized a small army of horsemen and built a chain of 200 relief stations – spanning from Missouri to California.

The horsemen would ride between relief stations … handing their mail bags off to a new courier, every 75-100 miles. This ingenious solution reduced average delivery times to a blazingly quick – 10 days!

Interestingly, in order to keep the loads on the horses as light as possible … they only hired men weighing between 100 and 125 pounds. (The same weight as a modern-day jockey). And, while the average age of a rider was 20 years old … it wasn’t uncommon for teenagers as young as 14 years-old to be employed!

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Not much, really.

That said … our latest role happens to be located in Sacramento … the home of the original Pony Express!

THE ‘CHRISTMAS MIRACLE’ ROLE – (OTE: $175,000 – $185,000+)

On December 7, 1914 (a few months after The Great War had begun) … Pope Benedict XV proposed a temporary cease-fire to recognize the significance of Christmas.

The countries involved instantly dismissed the suggestion and advised their armies to not even consider such an act.

However, on Christmas morning … Allied soldiers began to hear the words “Merry Christmas” echoing in the cold air.

They soon realized the voices were coming from no-man’s-land – the area separating their trenches from those of the Germans.

They suspected it was a trap … but, as they poked their heads out, they saw the German soldiers were in fact, unarmed!

Slowly … soldiers from both sides made their way into the field, shaking hands and exchanging Christmas greetings.

For the next few hours … they sat together, singing Christmas carols and trading gifts such as cigarettes and pudding. A friendly game of soccer was played – to boot!

DROPPING DIMES (OTE: $82,500 – $97,750)

Basketball fans … have definitely heard the term “dropping a dime”.
But what does it mean … and how did it originate?

In the game of basketball … an assist is registered when one player makes a pass to another … and that pass is integral to a basket being scored.

The saying is believed to have originated from the days before cell phones … (when you actually had to find a pay phone to make a call).

Back then, it cost 10 cents to make a phone call … and a person would often ask another for a dime. As such … giving someone a dime was, in essence – assisting them to make a phone call.

“TOUGH LUCK” ($80,000)

Abraham Shakespeare was born in April 1966. The product of a troubled childhood, he dropped out of school after 7th grade … and spent nearly 3 decades taking odd jobs, as a labourer.

On November 15, 2006, on their way to Miami … Abraham and a man named, Michael Ford stopped at a gas station. Ford bought some cigarettes and a soda pop … and Abraham purchased two lottery tickets with the last few dollars he had in his pocket.

The next morning, Abraham was holding the winning ticket to the Florida State Lottery – worth $30,000,000!

He bought a big house and a Rolex watch (albeit from a pawn shop) … and eased into the $17,000,000 he’d chosen to receive as a lump payment.

In October 2008, Shakespeare answered a call from a woman named Dee-Dee Moore who explained she wanted to write a book about his life.

They would go on to start a business together … and in short order, Dee-Dee stole a million dollars.
Tragically, 14 months later, police unearthed Abraham’s body from under a concrete slab at Dee-Dee’s house.

“CAT IN THE BAG” ($96,000 – $108,000)

You’ve heard the phrase … “let the cat out of the bag” … and you know it has to do with revealing a secret.
But where did it originate?

Well, back in the 1700’s, it was common practice for people to buy and sell piglets from one another – in bags.

Every so often … certain unscrupulous individuals would try and slip a few cats into the bag (as cats were worth far less than piglets) … to try and increase the profitability of their transaction!

Every now and then … a discerning buyer decided to verify their purchase.
When they opened the bag, the cats would leap out … and the scam was exposed!
