MASS HYSTERIA ($100,000 – $110,000+)

In 1962, a few workers in the dress making department of a North Carolina Textile mill, took ill.

They claimed to be experiencing numbness, dizziness and nausea.
Soon after … news spread that a bug in the factory was biting employees and causing the illness.

Over the next few days … more and more employees started to experience the same mysterious symptoms!

In total, 62 people were affected … a number of which required hospitalization.
Of the 62 employees, 59 worked on the first shift, 58 worked in the same area.
50 of the cases occurred in the two days after the media had “sensationalized” the event.

Company physicians and officials from the US Public Health Service visited the mill and following their investigation … they concluded the episode had been a case of ‘mass hysteria’!

While researchers believed some workers had actually been bitten by a June Bug, the anxiety associated to the event was the cause of the symptoms.

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?

RED HAND ($103,500 – $120,000)

The Red Hand has long been a cultural symbol representing the Province of Ulster, in Northern Ireland.

As one legend of its origin has it … once upon a time, there was a king who had two sons.

To determine which of his sons would succeed their father on the throne, they agreed to a competition.

The competition would be a boat race around an island … and back to shore.

The first to lay a hand on the shoreline would be declared the winner – and “king-in-waiting”!

The boats set-off on the race … and for the most part, remained ‘neck-and-neck’.

As they rounded the island, heading back to shore … one of the boats started to pull ahead.

Quickly approaching the finish line, the brother in the trailing vessel realized he was going to lose.

Refusing to surrender, he grabbed his sword and in one mighty stroke, chopped off his own hand!

He threw it (red and bloody) … onto the beach – and sealed his victory!

BURIED TREASURE ($90,000 – $100,000+)

When it comes to notorious gangsters, few names have garnered more infamy than – John Dillinger.

In fact, it was Dillinger’s laundry list of capers that eventually led to J. Edgar Hoover overhauling the FBI.

In April 1934, Dillinger and a group of outlaws were surrounded by FBI Agents at a roadhouse in Mercer, Wisconsin.

Gunfire eventually broke out, but somehow … in all the confusion, the gangsters (including Baby Face Nelson) managed to escape. It is believed Dillinger buried $200,000 in a suitcase, somewhere near that roadhouse.

Three months later, after having recovered at his father’s farm … Dillinger returned to Chicago.

On July 22nd as he was leaving a theatre, two Federal Agents approached him.

Dillinger pulled his weapon and was shot four times … and died.
It is believed the $200,000 he hid in Wisconsin … is still buried there today!

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Not much, really.

POTATO FARMER – ($65,000 – $70,000)

In 1983, 61-year-old Australian potato farmer – Cliff Young made his way to the starting line of the famous Sydney to Melbourne (875-kilometer) Ultramarathon!

Minutes before setting out … Cliff stood there, dressed in overalls and rubber boots … while muscular, twenty-somethings reviewed their strategies and snickered about the stranger in their midst.

Once the starter’s pistol fired … Cliff removed his dentures and placed them in his pocket. (He hated how they rattled when he ran.)

At the time, the widely accepted method in ultramarathon racing was to run for 18 hours … then sleep for 6.

The thing is … no one told Cliff he was supposed to stop and sleep!
So, Cliff just kept running … and running … and running!

INTOXICADO ($70,000 – $80,000)

In 1980, 18-year-old high school sports star, Willie Ramirez arrived at a South Florida hospital – in a coma.

His Cuban friends and family did not speak English.

In their struggle to communicate with the medical staff, a family member used the word ‘intoxicado’.

(In Spanish, the word means someone has ingested something – it could be a drug or a bad hamburger!)

The ER doctor assumed it meant ‘intoxicated’ … and immediately diagnosed Ramirez with a drug overdose.

Even as results of numerous ‘tox screens’ came back clean … medical staff never questioned the doctor’s initial assessment.

36 hours later, someone finally figured out Willie was suffering from a blood clot in his brain.

But, it was too late … Ramirez had suffered irreparable damage.

Regrettably, a year later, he left the hospital – a quadriplegic. He was eventually awarded $71 million in a medical malpractice suit. For the record, a translator on staff would have cost the hospital about $40,000 / year.

JOHN HANCOCK – $97,000 – $135,000+ (USD)

In May 1775 … George Washington was the leader of the Continental Army.

John Hancock (of Massachusetts) was appointed Congress President.

Hancock’s claim to fame is tied to being the first representative to sign the US Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 – pronouncing the United States’ emancipation from British rule.

Of the 56 signatures on this historic document, Hancock’s is by far the most well-known … as he prominently signed it dead center – larger and more gracefully than his counterparts!

To this day, asking for someone’s “John Hancock” is a common phrase used when requesting their signature.

COLD FEET ($60,000 – $70,000)

Once upon a time, 3 men who worked together at Atari, decided to start their own company.

On April 1, 1976 … they signed their partnership agreement.
Two of the men would each own 45% of the company … leaving the third man, named Ronald, with a measly 10% share.

12 days later, Ronald got “cold feet” about the venture and decided to sell his 10% stake back for $800.00.

Had he held onto his shares … today they’d would be worth $200,000,000,000.00.

If you haven’t figured it out already … the company was Apple.
