BOOM (OTE: $65,000+)

102 years ago, the Purity Distilling Company of Boston, Massachusetts had installed a molasses tank, standing 15 meters tall by 27 meters wide.

It held 8.7 million liters of molasses (enough to fill 3.5 Olympic-sized pools).

Before we get to the story … you should know that fermented molasses produces ethanol.
Ethanol is the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages and it also happens to be a key component in the manufacture of ammunition.

On January 14, 1919, a ship delivered a new load of molasses, which was heated to simplify transfer. The next day, at about 12:30pm, likely due to thermal expansion of the older, cold molasses – the tank burst!

Witnesses reported feeling the ground shake and hearing “a thunderclap” – followed by machine gun-like sounds … as rivets shot out of the tank, like bullets.

The explosion and subsequent wave of molasses, surged through the streets at over 50 km/h, sadly killing 21 people and injuring 150.

MILK IT (OTE: $80,000 – $92,000+)

Milking something for all it’s worth … is a term used to describe the process of getting as much as possible from a resource.

And, if you’re looking for an example of someone who absolutely mastered the art of ‘milkin’ it’ – look no further than, Sergey Bubka!

Sergey was born in Luhansk, Ukraine on December 4, 1963, and would grow up to become the most famous (and successful) pole vaulter, the world has ever seen!

In fact, he was so dominant in his sport that eventually, sponsors stopped extending ‘win bonuses’.

This presented a big problem … as track and field athletes rely on these bonuses as a source of income.

Eventually, Nike decided to sponsor Bubka – agreeing to pay him, to effectively, beat himself! Every time he broke the World Record … Nike would reportedly pay him tens of thousands of dollars.

So, this clever athlete found a way to maximize his earnings within the terms of the agreement.

Between 1991 and 1994 alone … Sergey bested himself 9 times.
7 of those times, he beat his previous World Record by a mere, 1 centimeter!

Over his career, Bubka set the World Record a total of 35 times – earning himself at least $600,000 in bonuses.

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Absolutely nothing.

BUNNY HOP (OTE: $260,000 – $270,000+)

On my 13th birthday, my parents woke me up and told me to go to the garage.

I threw open the door and there she was … the Raleigh BMX Burner I’d been asking for – well, forever!

My prayers were answered – Ocean Blue … with ‘rat-trap’ pedals and 5-star yellow spoke rims!

I laced up my sneakers … and took that baby for a ride!
Since the bike was brand-new, I didn’t even consider trying to pop wheelies … but bunny hops were pretty safe.

So, I bunny-hopped like a maniac!

Cruising down the street, nodding at neighbourhood kids … I was sure every one of them was green with envy!

Every now and then, I’d see my reflection in a window and was awe-struck by the sheer beauty of my new bike.

Long story short, as I passed a group of kids sitting on their porch, I decided I’d probably look pretty cool if I spit.

Not taking the direction of the wind into account, that spit twirled through the air … and landed squarely on my shoulder!

Mortified … (and desperately hoping no one had witnesed the result of my ill-fated attempt at coolness), I feverishly wiped at my t-shirt … paying no regard to the direction my bike and I were heading in.

At that point, everything felt like it was happening in slow motion. I clipped the front end of a parked, Chevrolet Monte Carlo and cartwheeled across the hood – the new ‘love of my life’ … continuing in her own, ill-fated trajectory.

Now, maybe the kids on that porch didn’t see the event leading up to the wipe out … but they certainly couldn’t miss the ‘carnage’ that followed!

Beyond humiliated, I picked up my bike and limped down the street … dying a little inside, every time I noticed another scratch on my new bike.

THE EXECUTIONER (OTE: $260,000 – $270,000+)

In the late 1700’s, in Roscommon, Ireland … a woman named Betty and her son lived in terrible poverty.  Although uncommon for someone raised in such conditions, Betty was literate … and taught her son to read and write.

She regularly reminded her son that only money could bring happiness … and when he was old enough, he left Roscommon to find fortune – in America!

One dark and rainy evening, many years later, a well-dressed gentleman knocked on Betty’s door asking for a place to stay. She welcomed him in, but that night, as he lay sleeping … Betty (with knife in hand) crept into his room – and murdered him for his money!

As Betty rifled through the stranger’s belongings, she discovered this ‘stranger’ was in fact … her very own son!

Overcome by the horror of what she had done, Betty ran screaming into the streets … confessing her guilt.

She was arrested, stood trial … and was condemned to death – by hanging!

On Execution Day … as Betty and several other criminals filed into the yard, they learned the executioner had “called in sick” … and the sheriff was refusing to personally perform the executions.

Seizing the opportunity, Betty asked for her life be spared and in return, she’d hang the others – herself!

The sheriff agreed … and Betty got busy!

“Lady Betty” was so efficient … she was appointed Roscommon’s official Hang Woman – a job with a yearly salary (+ room and board)!

SWEET KISS OF DEATH (OTE: $150,000 – $180,000)

Frank Hayes was born in Ireland, and made his way to America where he became a horse trainer and stableman, in New York.

On June 3, 1923, Frank was asked to be a stand-in jockey for a race at Belmont Park – scheduled the next day.

He would be riding a horse named Sweet Kiss … and, he would need to drop 12 pounds, in 24 hours!

Having never won a race before … there was little expectation, especially since his horse was a 20-1 outsider.

To drop the weight … Frank spent several hours jogging and exercising – refusing to drink any water.

The following day, an extremely weak and tired Frank mounted his horse.

To everyone’s surprise Sweet Kiss (and Frank) crossed the finish line in first place that day – winning by a head.

And to everyone’s horror – they soon learned Frank had suffered a heart attack mid-race, yet somehow, his lifeless body did not fall off the horse!

EYE OF THE STORM (OTE: $115,000 – $120,000)

On February 14, 2007, German paraglider Ewa Wiśnierska decided to train for the World Championships in New South Wales, Australia. She ignored multiple weather warnings … calling for violent thunderstorms.

Ewa strapped herself into her glider and set off as her team tracked her progress from their van, below.

The first portion of her flight was calm … and then, two thunderstorm clouds appeared, directly in her path.

While Ewa frantically tried to avoid being caught in their updraft … it didn’t work and in an instant … she was sucked into the ascending current – lifting her at a speed of 77 km/h!

Surrounded by darkness and howling winds, the temperature around her turned freezing cold.

Ewa eventually lost consciousness and was covered in ice, eventually reaching an altitude of 9,946 metres.

She lingered above the storm for 40 minutes in -45°C temperatures … until the wing of her paraglider gave out from the weight of the ice – sending an unconscious Ewa into a horrifying free-fall towards earth.

Longer story short … Ewa’s paraglider mysteriously opened and the abrupt jerk woke her up!

3.5 hours after taking flight … and in rough shape, she somehow managed to steer and land her glider into a farmer’s field – 60 kilometers from where she had started.

Incredibly … save for some frost bite, Ewa emerged unscathed and was released from the hospital within a matter of hours.

GOD SAVE THE KING (OTE: $115,000 – $120,000)

George Frederick Ernest Albert (Queen Elizabeth’s grandfather) – was born June 3, 1865.
The likelihood of George ever becoming King were slim – as he was third in line to the throne.

In 1892, George’s older brother – Albert Victor, died of pneumonia.
In 1910, his father – King Edward VII passed … and George V ascended to the throne.

Fast forward 26 years to January 20, 1936.
George V was extremely ill, and bed ridden.
His physician, Lord Dawson of Penn was at his side and issued a bulletin declaring, “The King’s life is moving peacefully towards its close”.

George V’s death was officially pronounced at 11:55pm.

50 years later, in 1986 – Lord Dawson’s private diary was made public.
It revealed Dawson had administered lethal injections of morphine and cocaine to George V – to hasten the King’s death.
In essence … that’s a nice way of saying, he murdered the King!

Lord Dawson’s rationale?

He believed word of the monarch’s death needed to be announced ”in the morning papers, rather than the less appropriate evening journals”!

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Not much, really.

PACK A WALLOP (OTE: $130,000+)

Most people have never heard of the “Peacock Mantis Shrimp”.

It measures a mere 4 inches in length but, pound for pound … it’s among the heavy weight champs, in terms of strength, in the animal world.

This shrimp uses a spring-loaded club to punch its prey – (kinda like a crossbow).

Believe it or not, when activated, its club accelerates to over 80 km/h … at a force of more than 330 pounds.

That’s roughly equal to the energy of a bullet – shot from a 22-caliber pistol!

To put that in perspective, if a human could produce the same amount of force … they’d be able to shatter steel – with one punch!

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Not much, really.

That said, if you live in the Ottawa region and want a sales career with real “punch” … you’d be wise to get in touch with Sabrina Galli, for more details!

BRASS TACKS (OTE: $130,000+)

The saying “getting down to brass tacks” has several suggested origins.

These include; the brass tacks found on fine furniture, Cockney rhyming slang for the term “hard facts” … and the brass tacks hammered into a sales counter – to mark precise measuring points.

A less widespread theory involves the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Following Lincoln’s death, the undertaker was asked to design the Presidential coffin – using silver tacks as decoration.

In the mid-1800’s it was popular to decorate coffins – and people would often spell out the deceased’s initials on the casket. Generally, brass tacks were used, rather than silver … (as it was a more economical option).

In this case, the term “getting down to brass tacks” referred to getting down to some serious business – the business of death!

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Not much, really.

That said, if you’re serious about getting your sales career off on the right foot … let’s get down to “the brass tacks”.

You’d be hard pressed to find an organization better positioned to set you on the path for an extremely successful sales career!

BLAST OFF (OTE: $130,000+)

On March 23, 1965, Gus Grissom and John Young prepared to blast off into space, on the Gemini III capsule.

One of the objectives of their mission was to determine how astronauts could eat, (mess-free) in space.

The cuisine on the Gemini III sucked – consisting of squeezy tubes and plastic packages.

Unimpressed by the menu, prior to blasting off … John smuggled a Corned Beef on Rye onto the capsule.

A few hours into their mission, John unwrapped the contraband sandwich … and offered Grissom a bite.

To their horror, they soon realized crumbs from the sandwich were not conducive to zero-gravity conditions … and were scattering everywhere!

(Loose crumbs drifting through the cabin could easily have lodged themselves inside critical instrument panels – and the result could have proven fatal.)

Needless to say, NASA harshly reprimanded Young … and strict protocols were put in place for future missions!

What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Not much, really!

That said, just as a shuttle needs a strong “blast off” … so too does a successful sales career.
