In the late 1800’s, the body of an unidentified woman was pulled from the Seine River, in France. The drowned woman’s face had a hint of a smile – very similar to the famous painting of the Mona Lisa.
In fact, the pathologist was so incredibly smitten by the woman’s face, he made a plaster cast of it.
This death mask became extremely popular in France and was sold across the country.
A year later, a toy manufacturer was asked to create a doll to be used as a CPR mannequin. Needing a face for the body, the toy manufacturer remembered the death mask he’d seen at his grandparents’ home.
And that is the story behind “Rescue Annie” – the face that has been ‘kissed’ millions upon millions of times!
PS: CPR, trainees are taught to ask “Annie, are you OK?” while practicing resuscitation techniques.
The chorus of Michael Jackson’s song, “’Smooth Criminal’ was, in fact, inspired by Rescue Annie!
What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role? Nothing, really.

In October 2013, a Chinese real estate developer, Tan Youhui offered a contract killer (Hitman #1) $280,000 to murder his competitor, Mr. Wei … who had recently filed a lawsuit against him.
Hitman #1 pocketed half the money and subcontracted the job to another killer (Hitman #2), for $140,000. Hitman #2 followed suit and offered a lesser amount to Hitman #3. Hitman #3 skimmed a chunk of that money for himself and offered even less to Hitman #4. Hitman #4 did the same, presenting Hitman #5 with a measly 5% of the original amount ($14,000).
Hitman #5 got cold feet and contacted Mr. Wei – offering to help him fake his death. The two men staged the murder and Hitman #5 sent the pictures to #4 who sent them to #3, and so on!
At the same time, Mr. Wei contacted the police who arrested all the hired guns, as well as the real estate developer. Tan was sentenced to 5 years and each of the hitmen received between 2 and 4 years of jail time.

On February 10, 1840, Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The ceremony took place at St. James Palace, marking the first marriage of a reigning English Queen since Queen Mary, in 1554.
English aristocrats were outraged – but you’ll be surprised by the source of that rage. Now, Victoria’s mother and Prince Albert’s father, happened to be brother and sister (making the couple first cousins) – but that wasn’t a big deal, at all!
The indignation was fueled by something more ominous – the bride’s audacity to wear a white wedding gown!
You see, royal wedding gowns were usually red, and the colour white symbolized mourning. Soon after, the white wedding gown gained increasing popularity.
Sidenote: Queen Victoria wasn’t the first royal to wear a white wedding dress – that claim falls to Princess Philippa of England, in 1406 (and Mary Queen of Scots, in 1558)!

Adam Brown of Hot Springs, Arkansas was an A-student and star football player – with a bright future. That is, until he met a lady with a drug habit.
Adam had never dabbled in hard drugs, but after one hit of crack-cocaine – he was hooked. His life spiraled quickly, and he began stealing to support his drug habit. Shortly after that girlfriend left him, police found him in a crack house – laying in a pool of blood.
Facing 11 felony charges, he chose to enter a drug rehab to avoid jail time. Against all odds, Adam cleaned up his act and persuaded the Navy SEALs to give him a chance.
During a training accident, Adam lost his right eye – so he learned to shoot, using his left eye.
In Afghanistan, a freak accident resulted in his right hand being mangled – he learned to shoot with his left!
By age 33, Adam suffered with arthritis, a bad back, a broken leg and surgically repaired ankles – but he refused to quit.
In March 2010, while on special mission in Afghanistan, Adam was struck by enemy fire – and died. While his story ended tragically, his life is a testament to what perseverance and hard work can achieve.

The Venus Flytrap is a carnivorous plant, native to North and South Carolina. It grows to about 5 inches in diameter and each plant has about 6 stems with hinged leaves (that’s the trap).
This clever little plant lures insects with its red lining and sweet-smelling nectar.
When the insect lands inside its jaws, the plant doesn’t clamp down right away. Only when the plant senses a second movement does its jaw snap shut. And, on the insect’s third movement the Venus Flytrap will start to digest.
It takes between 5 and 12 days for the trap to re-open.
Sidenote: Only ~0.2% of flowering plants in the world are carnivorous (accounting for just over 600 species). Another sidenote: the Venus Flytrap can eat a tiny frog!

Long ago, before the internet, television and radio, the single source of information for most people was the good old newspaper. And while we’ve all heard the saying “Extra! Extra! Read all about it” – most people don’t know how this phrase came into existence.
You see, newspapers were published daily. And, in order to be printed, there needed to be a deadline – so publishers could send it off to the presses.
As we all know, the world doesn’t turn based on publishing schedules. Often, major events (deaths of Presidents or declarations of war) occurred – post deadline.
As such, newspapers would publish an extra edition. Paperboys would shout the phrase on street corners to drum-up enthusiasm and ultimately – sell more papers!
What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role? Nothing, really.

In 1986, wanted by police for 50 armed robberies, Valerio Viccei fled Italy, and arrived in London, England. The next year, he, and his accomplice, Parvez Latif walked into the KSDC and asked to rent a safe deposit box.
Once inside the vault, the men pulled out their pistols and overpowered the bank manager and his guards. They hung a ‘closed’ sign on the front door, while they ushered a few accomplices into the bank.
Ransacking the vault, the thieves fled with an estimated £60 million (nearly $200 million (USD) by today’s standards). Viccei then hopped on the next plane to South America – his riches in tow!
While in South America, Viccei began to yearn for the Ferrari Testarossa he had left behind in England. So, he made the decision to return to London and make arrangements to have his car shipped to his new home.
Needless to say – not the best idea he ever had. Upon returning to the UK, he was identified and arrested – and sentenced to 22 years in jail!
Long story short, he was deported to Italy in 1992 to serve the rest of his sentence. In April 2000, while on a day pass from prison, he met his demise – in a gunfight with police.

After a decade as a cowboy, he claimed he spent two years studying alongside a Hopi medicine man in Arizona. During his “apprenticeship”, Stanley claimed he was introduced to the medicinal properties of snake oil.
Stanley began peddling his own version of Snake Oil Liniment at medicine shows across America.
A consummate showman, Stanley would stand before a crowd, kill a few snakes, and mix his potion … as mesmerized onlookers opened their wallets, paying 50 cents per bottle – (about $20 in 2022).
He claimed his cure-all treated virtually anything – from headaches to arthritis to sciatica! The “Rattlesnake King” eventually established production facilities in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Short story shorter, in 1917 federal investigators seized a shipment of Stanley’s concoction and found it to contain mineral oil, a fatty oil, red pepper and turpentine – and not even one single drop of snake oil!
Stanley was fined $20 for “misbranding” his product as a pain remedy and ‘slithered’ away into oblivion.
